WASHINGTON, D.C. — On January 7, the Trump Administration announced the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations, marking its latest assault on international norms and global cooperation. This decision – which follows a February 4 Executive Order requiring review of U.S. participation in all international organizations, conventions and treaties – will only further isolate the United States in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
The administration’s retreat from the global stage reflects a broader pattern of distorting the truth and putting lives at risk in order to score domestic political points with the President’s extremist base.
Mark Bromley, the Co-Chair of the Council for Global Equality, issued the following statement:
“The calling card of the Trump Administration has been a vitriolic and vindictive ideological crusade to push a radical agenda abroad. Secretary Rubio’s statement labels these critical, often lifesaving organizations and programs as ‘DEI,’ ‘wasteful,’ and ‘unnecessary,’ but nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, the Trump Administration is trying to embolden anti-rights actors worldwide, dismantle the multilateral and international human rights infrastructure that has protected vulnerable people for decades, and advance a racist, neo-colonial, and authoritarian worldview. We call on the international community to stand firm in opposition to the United States’ actions and demand that the human rights of all be respected and protected.”
