The Council for Global Equality is a U.S.-based coalition of organizations working at the intersection of U.S. foreign policy and the human rights of LGBTQI+ people. We partner with civil society organizations, government officials, and multilateral institutions to advance a more coordinated, human rights-centered approach to protecting and promoting equality worldwide.

Each member appoints representatives to the Council’s collaborative work. Some members litigate, some conduct field research and documentation, some work on refugee and asylum protection, some on global health and development financing, and others on the private sector’s role abroad. What they hold in common is the conviction that the diplomatic, political, and economic leverage of the United States should be used to oppose abuses directed at people because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or sex characteristics.

Membership signals support for the Council’s mission and does not imply that a member has endorsed every position the Council takes.

Joining the Council

Membership is open to U.S.-based organizations whose work touches international human rights and whose mandate is consistent with the Council’s mission. Members are expected to designate at least one staff representative to the coalition’s work, participate in regular member convenings, and contribute to collective advocacy where their expertise is relevant. To help subsidize the costs of bringing Council members together in Washington twice a year, membership in the Council requires annual dues.
